Best Shanghai Restaurants: 33 Places to Eat by Cuisine

Shanghai closes restaurants faster than lists get updated. These are the best restaurants in Shanghai checked against the 2026 Michelin guide and the city's closure lists, grouped by cuisine, with addresses.

Most lists of the best Shanghai restaurants were written before the pandemic and never revisited, and Shanghai loses around a hundred notable restaurants a year. This one has been checked against the 2026 Michelin guide and the city’s closure lists. What is left is 33 places, grouped by cuisine, Michelin-starred rooms first, each with the address you need to find it.

What a meal in Shanghai costs

Shanghai is a first-tier city and prices run roughly 20 to 35 percent above Xi’an or Chengdu. A casual local meal is ¥25 to ¥40 a head, about $4 to $6. A proper sit-down dinner is ¥60 to ¥120 ($9 to $17). The hotel dining rooms and starred restaurants that make up much of this page sit in the ¥200 to ¥800 bracket per person, and climb from there once wine is involved.
